Where there are always rainbows
I just arrived home from a holiday trip out of town to a lone pumpkin staidly guarding our lawn while his brothers sat still uncarved and waiting on the front porch. Oops! Something I’m learning as a parent is that those things that make childhood memorable and fun are my job to remember! Like carving pumpkins and seeing Santa and birthday parties. So I’m off to a good start.
Along with holiday cheer, my whole extended family, babies and grandmas down to step-daughter-in-laws and the faux-nephew got norovirus. My heart goes out to all of you who have had a sick little one. Sleepless nights keeping watch, vomit in your face, diarrhea everywhere. I only got out of bed once on xmas to call for help. Bikeman brought in Little Tiger to nurse, and it was pretty much the only food he could keep down for a while.
Before that, I’ve been celebrating my one year marker by reading! Not one but 2 books. The first one is a true crime novel about a bank robber that lived in the trees (spoiler alert!) of Olympia and the second I’m still working on is the best book on feminism since Bossypants. Funny, SO funny and true. There are some really good bits in the beginning about porn and what feminism actually is: Liberation for women. It’s positive and offers a load of practical ways to deal with sexist situations. Plus, she’s British so there is a lot of funny vocab. Plus plus, she’s a mom of two.
Three months into Olympia, here are some notable items:
- The McDonalds in town does NOT have any large golden arches anywhere on the outside. There is this weird yellow awning frame and bike rack…It looks like a brick factory - that always has a line.
- I finally figured out what the green plus sign means. Like a red cross X but green. Law enforcement by appt only.
- The library is classic small town library. Before it was hip to renovate education lenders in the state capital.
- Olympia <3’s Planned Parenthood
- In the PNW, it is always perfect rainbow weather. When there is sun.
I’m working on the next installations of what the hell to do now with a 1-year old, and how to remain calm and creative. So talk to you soon!
I AM A STRIDENT FEMINIST!!
